064117768WHEREAS, Dorothy J. Price of Virginia Beach, a community benefactor and one of the first African-American directors of nursing at Sentara Norfolk Hospital, died on September 28, 2005; and
WHEREAS, a native of Norfolk, Dorothy Price graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1953 and attended the Norfolk Division of Virginia State College, now Norfolk State University; and
WHEREAS, Dorothy Price received a bachelor’s degree in nursing from St. Philip/Medical College of Virginia and a master’s degree in nursing administration from Hampton University; and
WHEREAS, Dorothy Price loved music and was a talented member
of the Chancel
Choir of First Calvary Baptist Church, and then later, of First Baptist
Church, Bute Street, when she and her husband William joined its congregation;
and
WHEREAS, Dorothy Price gave her time and immense talent to church and civic organizations, including LifeNet, which encourages vital organ donation by African Americans, and The Shepherd’s Village, which is an assisted living facility for the elderly; and
WHEREAS, because she was always involved in missions and charitable events in order to improve the well-being of her neighbors, Dorothy Price was honored with many community service awards; and
WHEREAS, Dorothy Price will be fondly remembered for her generous and caring nature and sorely missed by her family, her numerous friends and admirers, and the congregation of First Baptist Church; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a compassionate supporter of the community and an outstanding Virginian, Dorothy J. Price; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Dorothy J. Price as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
