Celebrating the life of Jeremiah Jonathan Jewett.

WHEREAS, Jeremiah Jonathan Jewett of Midlothian, a respected citizen, public servant, and community benefactor, died on October 8, 2005; and

WHEREAS, Jeremiah "Jerry" Jewett was born on May 2, 1925, graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School, earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Richmond, and received a law degree from the T.C. Williams School of Law; and

WHEREAS, during World War II, Jerry Jewett served his country in the United States Army Air Force; and

WHEREAS, after the war, Jerry Jewett married his wife, Patsy, and they lived in The Sycamores at his family home, which is now Crab Louie's Restaurant; the couple sold the homestead to the developers of Sycamore Square in 1975; and

WHEREAS, Jerry Jewett was admitted to the bar in 1949 and began his practice of law at Chesterfield Court House with Jewett and Gates, where he remained to work for successor firms; and

WHEREAS, in 1956, the Chesterfield Jaycees named Jerry Jewett its Young Man of the Year for his many contributions to the community; and

WHEREAS, active in civic and political affairs, Jerry Jewett represented Chesterfield, Henrico, and Colonial Heights in the House of Delegates for one term in 1960; and

WHEREAS, committed to improving the quality of life for his fellow citizens, Jerry Jewett served as vice chairman of the Richmond Regional Planning Commission, chairman of the Chesterfield Board of Real Estate Assessors, and a member of the Chesterfield Draft Board; and

WHEREAS, concerned for the well-being of his neighbors, Jerry Jewett served as president of the Midlothian Ruritan Club and was a member of the Midlothian Volunteer Fire Department for 18 years; and

WHEREAS, in 1977, Jerry Jewett retired from the law and began a second career as a real estate broker and developer, and was involved in numerous projects in the Richmond area; and

WHEREAS, an amateur historian, genealogist, and former trustee of the Chesterfield Historical Society, Jerry Jewett was often consulted on Chesterfield history; and

WHEREAS, Jerry Jewett was also a founding member of Willow Oaks Country Club, Salisbury Country Club, and the Federal Hill Club; and

WHEREAS, Jerry Jewett will be fondly remembered for his compassion and generosity and sorely missed by his family, his numerous friends and colleagues, and the citizens of Midlothian and Chesterfield County; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an outstanding Virginian, Jeremiah Jonathan Jewett; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Jeremiah Jonathan Jewett as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
