SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 198
Celebrating the life of Fred O. Funkhouser.

WHEREAS, Fred O. Funkhouser, a respected banker, generous community benefactor, and honorary member of the Board of Trustees of Bridgewater College, died on March 4, 2005; and

WHEREAS, a Harrisonburg native, Fred Funkhouser was born on November 20, 1910, graduated from Harrisonburg High School in 1930, attended Washington and Lee University for two years and the University of Richmond T.C. Williams School of Law for one and a half years; and

WHEREAS, after working for the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control for several years, Fred Funkhouser joined the Harrison Loan and Thrift Corporation, eventually becoming chairman of the board; and

WHEREAS, an excellent judge of character and entrepreneurial potential, Fred Funkhouser fostered local businesses and helped them grow and prosper, at times with little or no capital, if he ascertained that they had promise; and

WHEREAS, Fred Funkhouser became the owner and chairman of Spotswood Bank, a subsidiary of then State Planters Bank; he served for 11 years on the board when the bank became United Virginia Bank, now SunTrust; and

WHEREAS, active in community and civic affairs, Fred Funkhouser was a member of the board of directors of the Rockingham Public Library and Madison College Student Aid Foundation, served for a time as president of the Virginia Industrial Bankers Association and the Stuart Hall Foundation, and was treasurer of the Rockingham Development Corporation; and

WHEREAS, Fred Funkhouser was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow in 1986 by Rotary International; and

WHEREAS, a great benefactor of Bridgewater College, Fred Funkhouser, in memory of his wife of 60 years, who was a nurse, gave $4.6 million to build the Fred O. and Virginia C. Funkhouser Center for Health and Wellness; and

WHEREAS, Fred Funkhouser gave more than $1 million to establish the Virginia Funkhouser Health Sciences Library at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg; and

WHEREAS, Fred Funkhouser will be remembered for his compassionate and generous nature and will be sorely missed by his family, his numerous friends and admirers, and the residents of Harrisonburg; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a fine Virginia gentleman, Fred O. Funkhouser; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Fred O. Funkhouser as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
