SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 179
Commending Floyd County on the occasion of its 175th anniversary.

WHEREAS, Floyd County will celebrate its illustrious 175th anniversary in 2006; and

WHEREAS, Floyd County is thought to have been one of the first places visited by General Abraham Wood when exploration began to push westward in 1671; and

WHEREAS, settlers came to Floyd County as early as the 1750s and reported on its pristine beauty as “Our Beautiful Mountain”; and

WHEREAS, by the 1790s, “Lighthorse” Harry Lee was given a 25,000-acre land grant, including what is now the Buffalo Mountain Natural Area Preserve in Floyd County; and

WHEREAS, Floyd County, named for Governor John Floyd, was established by the Commonwealth of Virginia on January 15, 1831; and

WHEREAS, land for the first courthouse was donated by the prominent Tice and Phlegar families; and

WHEREAS, in 2006, the citizens of Floyd County will celebrate their rich history of agriculture, education, industry, music, the arts, and technological leadership; and

WHEREAS, many citizens and civic organizations are completing special legacy projects to document, celebrate, and preserve Floyd County’s history; and

WHEREAS, the county's anniversary coincides with the beginning of numerous celebrations in the Commonwealth in 2007, and Floyd County has been named by the governor as an official Virginia 2007 Community as part of the Virginia 2007 Community Program, established to expand tourism, economic development, and educational opportunities throughout the state in preparation for the 400th anniversary of the founding of Virginia and Jamestown; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate Floyd County on the occasion of its 175th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to representatives of Floyd County on behalf of all of its outstanding citizens, past and present, as an expression of the General Assembly's gratitude for its invaluable contribution to the history, culture, growth, and prosperity of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
