2006 SESSION
WHEREAS, John M. Gazzola, Jr., admired citizen, educator, and retired public relations director of The Homestead, died on October 31, 2005; and
WHEREAS, a native of Bath County, John Gazzola graduated from Valley High School and earned a bachelor's degree from Lynchburg College; and
WHEREAS, John Gazzola served his country in the United States Army during World War II, fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and received the Bronze Star, the Combat Infantry Badge, and three Battle Stars for his valiant duty; and
WHEREAS, an outstanding teacher and mentor of young people, John Gazzola taught school in Bath County for 10 years and was the girls' basketball coach at Valley High School, winning 124 games and losing only 32 during his tenure; and
WHEREAS, committed to improving the quality of life for all of his neighbors, John Gazzola served for 18 years on the Bath County School Board, as well as two terms on the Bath County Board of Supervisors; and
WHEREAS, in 1961, John Gazzola joined The Homestead as public relations director, and perhaps was best known in the world of golf, reporting for the media on tournaments held at the resort's popular Cascades Golf Course; and
WHEREAS, a consummate professional and tireless advocate for his beloved Bath County and The Homestead, John Gazzola retired after a superb 34-year career on June 30, 1995; and
WHEREAS, John Gazzola will be fondly remembered for his gracious hospitality and kind and generous nature, and will be sorely missed by his family, his friends and numerous admirers, and the citizens of Bath County; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an outstanding Virginia gentleman, John M. Gazzola, Jr.; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of John M. Gazzola, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
