SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 141
Celebrating the life of Warner Magajar Jones, Sr.

WHEREAS, Warner Magajar Jones, Sr. was called to eternal rest on September 8, 2005; and

WHEREAS, Warner Magajar Jones, Sr. received his primary education at Coal Pit, a two-room school in Henrico County, and attended Virginia Randolph High School, where he was personally inspired by Miss Virginia Randolph, a pioneer of education in Henrico County; and

WHEREAS, he earned a baccalaureate degree in history from Virginia Union University, a master's degree from Virginia State University, and completed postgraduate work at the University of Virginia, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa; and

WHEREAS, after completing his education, Warner Magajar Jones, Sr. began his career as an educator in the Henrico County Public Schools, where he served as a teacher, assistant principal, and principal for more than 40 years, enriching and molding the minds of young people; and

WHEREAS, during history's dark moments for African Americans, he taught his students more than history and government, instilling in them the values of perseverance, good moral character, and integrity, which has had a lasting effect for many generations in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, he touched countless lives, sons and daughters of the Commonwealth whose many outstanding achievements place them among the nation's most accomplished professionals, policy makers, and personalities; and

WHEREAS, Warner Magajar Jones, Sr., fondly nicknamed "Henrico County Historian" and often asked to lecture on the history of education and the legacy of Miss Virginia Randolph, was recognized and valued for his vast knowledge of history and political systems and efforts to preserve the chronicles of the county he faithfully served; and

WHEREAS, Warner Magajar Jones, Sr. was actively involved in many civic organizations, including the Board of Directors of Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens, the Virginia Randolph Foundation, the Historic Preservation Advisory Committee, the Association for the Preservation of Henrico Antiquities, and the Henrico Historical Society; and

WHEREAS, a devoted member of Abner Baptist Church in Hanover County, Warner Magajar Jones, Sr. brought great joy and inspiration to the lives of his family and friends; and

WHEREAS, Warner Magajar Jones, Sr. leaves an enviable and enduring legacy of teaching excellence, community service, and an infectious love of learning that touched and improved the lives of thousands of young people, and his memory will be forever cherished; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Warner Magajar Jones, Sr., a distinguished scholar and teacher; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Warner Magajar Jones, Sr., native son, as an expression of the General Assembly's sympathy for their loss and its abiding respect for his memory.
