SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 112
Commending Edgar E. Maroney.

WHEREAS, Edgar "Ed" E. Maroney, city manager of the City of Newport News for 18 years, retired on December 31, 2005; and

WHEREAS, holding a master's degree in urban design, Ed Maroney aspired to be a public servant while still in college in New Haven, Connecticut; during his long and distinguished career, he served as city manager in Lexington, Kentucky, and as county manager in Sarasota, Florida, and worked for state government in Florida; and

WHEREAS, when he became city manager of Newport News in 1987, Ed Maroney envisioned a softer, more beautiful city; and, over the years, he made that vision a reality for the citizens of the City of Newport News by visually transforming the cityscape through landscaping projects, improvement of existing public buildings and thoroughfares, and new structural design and imaginative urban planning; and

WHEREAS, during his tenure, Ed Maroney witnessed positive and dramatic change and was instrumental in the attraction of business, industry, and scientific and educational enterprises to the city; and

WHEREAS, ably balancing the growth and interests of both the technical and manufacturing industries, Ed Maroney provided steady management during a period of explosive growth and economic development in the Tidewater area; and

WHEREAS, an excellent leader with vast experience, Ed Maroney provided Newport News with guidance and profound wisdom as the community faced changing demographics, an aging infrastructure, and difficult environmental challenges; and

WHEREAS, during his tenure in Newport News, Ed Maroney pursued public policies that enhanced the quality of life and well-being for all residents of the Tidewater area; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend Edgar E. Maroney on the completion of nearly two decades of meritorious service and dedication to the citizens of the City of Newport News; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Edgar E. Maroney as an expression of the General Assembly's gratitude for his outstanding public service and best wishes for a long, joyful, and most well-earned retirement.
