Commending the Woodburn School for the Fine and Communicative Arts.

WHEREAS, the Woodburn School for the Fine and Communicative Arts of Fairfax County Public Schools is recognized for serving the children of Falls Church and Annandale for over 50 years; and

WHEREAS, the Woodburn School opened in 1953 with an enrollment of 457 students, immediately over capacity,  and an addition was added in 1954, another in 1957, and it was completely remodeled in 1974-1975; and

WHEREAS, the Woodburn School will again undergo a major renovation in 2007-2009 to  meet current building  standards for elementary schools in Fairfax County; and

WHEREAS, in addition to the Fairfax County Public Schools curriculum, the Woodburn School utilizes the fine and communicative arts of music, drama, dance and movement, literature, and the visual arts to enhance traditional academic subjects, while meeting the educational needs of all students whether they are visual, tactile, auditory, or kinesthetic learners; and

WHEREAS, a focus school since 2003, Woodburn students receive additional instruction that is not offered at most other Fairfax County Public Schools; and all students receive visual arts instruction, third-graders study violin, and band is offered to fourth-graders; and

WHEREAS, teachers and staff members of the Woodburn School receive arts integration training at the Kennedy Center and Wolf Trap and ongoing staff development is provided by the school once a month in the Curriculum Weaving Mondays program; and

WHEREAS, the Woodburn School philosophy emphasizes that the traditional academic subjects integrated with the arts can be more hands-on, meaningful, and vivid for students and the rate of retention and student learning may be increased; and

WHEREAS, each year, teachers and staff choose a theme for schoolwide focus, such as the 2005-2006  fall focus of “Open Your Eyes” and the spring focus William Shakespeare; and

WHEREAS, the community and the school's Parent Teacher Association provide support for the fine and communicative arts curriculum  with funds for field trips, performers, supplies, and organization of the after-school enrichment program, The Woodburn Academy for the Fine and Playful Arts; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates commend and congratulate the Woodburn School for the Fine and Communicative Arts for over 50 years of outstanding service to the young people of Fairfax County; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the principal of the Woodburn School for the Fine and Communicative Arts as an expression of the House of Delegates’ gratitude for the school’s commitment to excellence in education.
