069686424WHEREAS, J. Donald Edwards of Alexandria, a former member and chairman of the Alexandria Commission on Aging, died on December 13, 2005; and
WHEREAS, a native of Wisconsin and a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, J. Donald Edwards served in the United States Navy during World War II; and
WHEREAS, following the war, J. Donald Edwards resumed his civil service career with the federal government in the Department of the Navy and the Air Force Systems Command at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland until his retirement in 1973; and
WHEREAS, in 1975 J. Donald Edwards became a member of the Alexandria Commission on Aging, where he served as chairman of the Housing and Access Committees, as liaison to the Virginia Coalition on Aging, and as chairman of the commission; and
WHEREAS, during J. Donald Edwards' tenure as chairman, the Alexandria Commission on Aging became a leader in guardianship, and he served as a volunteer guardian in the city's Fourth Ward; and
WHEREAS, in 1998 J. Donald Edwards was the recipient of the Annie B. Rose Lifetime Achievement Award, given by the Commission on Aging to an individual "whose exemplary achievements span a lifetime of public service, and whose achievements have been devoted to significantly enhancing the community"; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of an exceptional citizen of Alexandria, J. Donald Edwards; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of J. Donald Edwards as an expression of the respect in which his memory is held by the members of the House of Delegates.
