Celebrating the life of Helen Anderson Miller.

WHEREAS, Helen Anderson Miller, a lifelong resident of Alexandria, died on December 19, 2005, at the age of 89; and

WHEREAS, Helen Miller attended Parker-Gray School in the early 1920s and was a member of its PTA from 1946 until 1967; and

WHEREAS, Helen Miller advocated for civil rights for African Americans, participating in sit-ins and marches, and was one of the first African-American graduates of the Alexandria Police Academy; and

WHEREAS, an advocate for children, Helen Miller was chairman of the building committee for Hopkins House in the 1970s and helped organize its first day care center; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of her community contributions, Hopkins House named a special award for volunteer activities with the neighborhood center the Helen Miller Community Heart Award; and

WHEREAS, Helen Miller was the first African-American woman in Alexandria to have a park named in her honor; and

WHEREAS, a 50-year member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church, Helen Miller served as an example for others to follow; and

WHEREAS, Helen Miller will be missed by her six children, her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren and other family members, and her community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Helen Anderson Miller, a fine Virginian; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Helen Anderson Miller as an expression of the respect and admiration of the House of Delegates.
