WHEREAS, Gail Gerringer Schenck, the fiscal officer of the House of Delegates, retired on October 1, 2005; and

WHEREAS, a native of Greensboro, North Carolina, Gail Schenck graduated from Walter Hines Page High School and earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro; and

WHEREAS, before beginning her employment with the House of Delegates Clerk’s Office, Gail Schenck taught home economics to high school students in North Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee; and

WHEREAS, in 1978 Gail Schenck began working in a temporary capacity for the House of Delegates Clerk’s Office, and on January 1, 1981, joined the full-time staff of the House Clerk’s Office as a fiscal assistant; and

WHEREAS, in 1996 Gail Schenck became the fiscal officer of the House of Delegates and remained in that position until her retirement; and

WHEREAS, Gail Schenck served under House Clerks Joseph H. Holleman, Jr., and Bruce F. Jamerson and under Speakers John Warren Cooke; A. L. Philpott; Thomas W. Moss, Jr.; S. Vance Wilkins, Jr.; and William J. Howell; and

WHEREAS, Gail Schenck was a member of the American Society of Legislative Clerks and Secretaries and attended the Commonwealth Management Institute; and

WHEREAS, Gail Schenck’s focus on the prudent use of House resources and her advocacy for the frugal spending of state dollars was instrumental in maintaining the fiscal integrity of the House budget for more than 20 years; and

WHEREAS, Gail Schenck’s coworkers and colleagues from other agencies will miss her professionalism, her infectious laughter, and her storytelling ability; and

WHEREAS, Gail Schenck is a passionate golfer who competes in amateur events throughout the Commonwealth and the region and who has scored at least two holes-in-one at this writing; and

WHEREAS, in her retirement, Gail Schenck plans to pursue with more regularity her passion for the game of golf; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Gail Gerringer Schenck be hereby commended for her many years of dedicated service to the House of Delegates; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Gail Gerringer Schenck as an expression of the House of Delegates’ gratitude for her many contributions and best wishes for a long, happy, and well-deserved retirement.
