068309302WHEREAS, the Commonwealth Coach and Trolley Museum, Inc., was formed in 1999 when the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke decided to dispose of its fleet of transit coaches collected through the years; and
WHEREAS, individuals familiar with Roanoke's 1997 Downtown Plan, which called for the restoration of the museum's fleet for use by non-profits and community events, met to consider forming an organization; and
WHEREAS, the Commonwealth Coach and Trolley Museum, Inc., was formed and received Internal Revenue Service designation as a charitable organization in early 2000 and has been in operation ever since; and
WHEREAS, the purpose of the Commonwealth Coach and Trolley Museum, Inc., is to educate Virginians about the history, use, and efficiency of public transit, while serving non-profit organizations and public events; and
WHEREAS, the museum has provided shuttles for Virginia's Explore Park, Center in the Square, the National D-Day Memorial, Mill Mountain Zoo, the American Heart Association, local churches, and the National EMS Memorial Service, among many others; and
WHEREAS, currently the Commonwealth Coach and Trolley Museum, Inc., transports more than 5,000 people per year and enables many of them to attend public events; and
WHEREAS, the Commonwealth Coach and Trolley Museum, Inc., continues to selectively acquire coaches when they represent geographic parts of the Commonwealth or when an item is important to the fleet from a historical perspective; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby designate the Commonwealth Coach and Trolley Museum, Inc., as the Official Transit Museum of the Commonwealth.
