Commending Tenants and Workers United on the occasion of its 20th anniversary.

WHEREAS, Tenants and Workers United, located in Alexandria, Virginia, was organized in 1986 to advocate for low-income people in Northern Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Tenants and Workers United has organized programs to encourage low-income parents to participate in schools and to provide computer training and access to social services; and

WHEREAS, in 1996 Tenants and Workers United established a 284-unit housing cooperative that is currently valued at $15 million and has become a stepping stone to individual home ownership; and

WHEREAS, the Unity Campaign, a Chapter of Tenants and Workers United, in 2001 successfully advocated for a $150,000 increase in the City of Alexandria’s child care budget; and

WHEREAS, in 2003 Tenants and Workers United won the Leadership for a Changing World award for its efforts to halt gentrification in Alexandria, Virginia; and

WHEREAS, in 2004 Tenants and Workers United opened a community center in Arlandria; and

WHEREAS, Tenants and Workers United has won important victories in increasing access to affordable housing and health care; and

WHEREAS, Tenants and Workers United has improved the economic well-being of cab drivers and other workers through its advocacy; and

WHEREAS, Tenants and Workers United has increased civic participation by developing leaders from low-income communities; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Tenants and Workers United for its efforts on behalf of low-income people in Northern Virginia; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the president of Tenants and Workers United as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the committee's dedicated work on behalf of lower income Virginians.
