Commending Amherst County High School on the occasion of its 50th anniversary.

WHEREAS, in 1956-57, Amherst County High School initiated its first academic school year; and

WHEREAS, Amherst County High School was guided through its initial school year by principal Kenneth R. Fulp, 1956-1958, and an additional seven principals, Richard E. Lee, 1958-1977, Karl E. Carter, 1977-1995, Robert J. Grant, 1995-1997, F. Dewitt House, 1997-1999, C. Allen Sprinkle, 1999-2000, Sharon O. Basil, 2000-2002, and Ernest T. Guill, 2002-present, have since led the school; and

WHEREAS, Amherst County High School was consolidated with Madison Heights High School in 1962-63, and integrated its classes during the 1964-65 school year, opening the doors of learning to all of Amherst County’s young people; and

WHEREAS, citizens of the community have supported Amherst County High School by providing numerous upgrades, improvements, and additions to the physical facilities; and

WHEREAS, Amherst County High School students have excelled in both academics and athletics through the course of its 50-year history, and the faculty and staff have been a source of inspiration and guidance to generations of students; and

WHEREAS, Amherst County High School is currently celebrating its 50th anniversary with events and commemorations throughout the school year; and

WHEREAS, Amherst County High School students, faculty, staff, parents, and alumni look forward with eager anticipation to the on-going contributions that the school system will make to future generations of Amherst County residents; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the students, faculty, staff, parents, and alumni of Amherst County High School and the surrounding  community on reaching this milestone in the school’s history; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Amherst County High School as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations and best wishes for the future.
