2006 SESSION
065874392WHEREAS, Pittsylvania County native Peyton Sellers claimed the 2005 NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series National Championship; and
WHEREAS, the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series consists of four regional divisions and includes racing at 57 short tracks across the nation; its national title is awarded to the divisional leader with the highest point total based on the best 16 finishes during the season; and
WHEREAS, with South Boston Speedway as his home track, Peyton Sellers claimed 15 wins and 20 top-five finishes in 28 races, including 12 at South Boston, during his championship season; and
WHEREAS, by capturing the 2005 title, Peyton Sellers became the 24th national champion in the series and the first under NASCAR's new points format; and
WHEREAS, Peyton Sellers is the youngest champion in series history, the first from South Boston Speedway, and only the second Virginia driver to win the championship; and
WHEREAS, though only 21 years old, Peyton Sellers is a racing veteran; he began racing go-karts at age seven, moved progressively through the classifications, and captured "Rookie of the Year" laurels in his first year in the Late Model Stock Car Division at South Boston in 2002; and
WHEREAS, Peyton Sellers is a Dan River High School graduate, has earned a degree in Motorsports Management from Danville Community College, and is studying business management at Averett University; and
WHEREAS, the 2005 awards banquet in Nashville marked a stellar season for the entire Sellers Racing Inc. team; Peyton's brother, H. C., garnered the Lunati Crew Chief Award for guiding his brother's racing team, and the Lincoln Electric Car Owner Award went to Lawrence Pickeral and Burt Sellers, Peyton's father; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate Peyton Sellers for his achievement in capturing the 2005 NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series National Championship and bringing the spotlight to Virginia racing and the South Boston Speedway; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Peyton Sellers as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for his stellar success in his still young racing career and best wishes for future success.
