WHEREAS, the Newport News/Hampton Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc., has exceeded 50 years of exemplary service to the community; celebrating its 50-year anniversary in 2004; and
WHEREAS, Jack and Jill of America was founded in 1938 in Pennsylvania by 20 mothers with the idea of bringing their children together in a social environment, and the Newport News/Hampton Chapter was founded on February 24, 1954, by Mrs. Thelma Boone; and
WHEREAS, Jack and Jill is an organization of mothers with children between the ages of two and 19, and is dedicated to improving the quality of life for children and in particular African-American children, and the Newport News/Hampton Chapter has achieved that goal; and
WHEREAS, the Newport News/Hampton Chapter of Jack and Jill of America has provided educational, cultural, civic and social programs for children; and
WHEREAS, past events of the Newport News/Hampton Chapter of Jack and Jill of America include an SAT tutorial program, a Kwanzaa program, a Jack and Jill Regional Teen Conference, a teen sexuality workshop for the community that over 300 teens attended, and an etiquette workshop cumulating in a formal ball; and
WHEREAS, through the years, many local members of Jack and Jill have served as national directors of the Mid-Atlantic Region, and many teens in the organization have held regional positions; and
WHEREAS, the Newport News/Hampton Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc., has many reasons to celebrate its 50th anniversary; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Newport News/Hampton Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc., on the occasion of achieving more than 50 years of being an active, productive service organization; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Gaylene Kanoyton of the Newport News/Hampton Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc., as an expression of the General Assembly's best wishes for the continued success of the organization.
