2006 SESSION
069734544WHEREAS, North Springfield Elementary School, one of Fairfax County's finest elementary schools, celebrates its 50th anniversary in October 2006; and
WHEREAS, North Springfield Elementary, housed in four rental homes on Axton Street, opened in 1956; the actual school building was constructed in 1957 and opened to students that same year; and
WHEREAS, in 1969 North Springfield was the largest elementary school in Fairfax County with an enrollment of 1,015 students; today a comfortable-size student body of 511 students fills North Springfield's halls; and
WHEREAS, North Springfield, initially serving students from kindergarten to the sixth grade, has supported a great variety of programs throughout the years including a center for students with emotional disabilities, classes for students with special needs, and a school-based program for talented and gifted students; and
WHEREAS, in the 1990s, a preschool program that included both Head Start and preschool special education was added to the North Springfield curriculum, which now has students enrolled through the fifth grade; and
WHEREAS, a school with a diverse student body, North Springfield serves students from over 100 different countries and accommodates students through an active, school-based ESOL, English Speakers of Other Languages, program; and
WHEREAS, North Springfield's very involved and dynamic Parent Teacher Organization coordinates the family fun fair, sports clinics, PTO dinners, and a family picnic in the spring; and
WHEREAS, North Springfield Elementary School is committed to providing instructional programs that ensure the opportunity for the development of each child socially, morally, aesthetically, academically, and physically; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend North Springfield Elementary School on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Alice Alexander, principal of North Springfield Elementary School, as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations and best wishes for continued success.
