HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 496
Commending Spencer Roberts.

WHEREAS, Spencer Roberts is the recipient of the 2006 Governor Spotswood award; and

WHEREAS, the award, sponsored by the Spotsylvania Courthouse Tourism and Special Events Commission, is given to a county resident who best exemplifies the type of community service espoused by Virginia's first Colonial Governor, Alexander Spotswood; and

WHEREAS, Spencer Roberts' integrity, loyalty, superb personal example, discipline, and exemplary citizenship make him the ideal recipient; and

WHEREAS, Spencer Roberts has given 58 years of service to the Spotsylvania County community and has dedicated countless hours to service groups and community concerns; and

WHEREAS, a Virginian by birth, Spencer Roberts was born in Clarendon, Arlington County, raised in Hillsboro, and moved with his wife to Spotsylvania County in 1946, where he became an area distributor for the former Washington Star newspaper; and

WHEREAS, in 1953 Spencer Roberts began his own business, Roberts Wholesale Meats, serving local stores until he retired in 1982; and

WHEREAS, Spencer Roberts is the one remaining charter member of the Spotsylvania Lions Club,  and is a life member and  has been awarded the Melvin Jones Fellow Award of the Spotsylvania Lions Club; and

WHEREAS, a former Spotsylvania Ruritan Club member for over 50 years, Spencer Roberts served as president for seven terms, was a former Ruritan District Governor, and was a Tom Downing Fellow; and  

WHEREAS, Spencer Roberts helped organize the Spotsylvania Rescue Squad, served as its president in 1978, and was named an Honorary Life Member; and

WHEREAS, Spencer Roberts was a member of the Spotsylvania Athletic Association and was instrumental in procuring the acreage for the athletic center that is now the Marshall Center; he is a member and active supporter of Spotsylvania Crime Solvers and Spotsylvania Emergency Concerns Association and actively supports the Spotsylvania County Department of Social Services; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Spencer Roberts as a worthy recipient of the 2006 Governor Spotswood Award; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Spencer Roberts as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations and best wishes for continued success.
