HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 494
Commending John L. Porter.

WHEREAS, John L. Porter, outstanding principal of T. C. Williams High School, is recognized for his long and continuing service to the Alexandria City Public Schools; and

WHEREAS, John Porter earned a bachelor's degree in history from North Carolina Wesleyan College in Rocky Mount in 1969 and a master's degree in educational administration from Virginia Tech in 1974; and

WHEREAS, an experienced and superb administrator, John Porter has served as an associate principal and principal in Alexandria schools since 1973; and

WHEREAS, in 1979 John Porter joined T. C. Williams High School which is characterized by its racial, ethnic, and socio-economic diversity and is comprised of students who come from more than 75 different countries and speak 50 different languages; and

WHEREAS, John Porter was an associate principal at T. C. Williams High School from 1979 to 1984 and principal from 1984 to 2006; and

WHEREAS, John Porter has received numerous honors for his outstanding leadership, including the 1971 Teacher of the Year from the Alexandria Jaycees, the 1987 Distinguished Educational Leader from the Washington Post, the 1990 Outstanding Alumnus from the Alexandria Boys Club, the 1994 The Arc/Riggs Educational Leadership Award, and the 1999 E.L. Patterson Education Award from the Northern Virginia Urban League, Inc.; and

WHEREAS, under John Porter's excellent guidance, T.C. Williams High School's diverse student body of more than 2,000 students and 230 exemplary teachers and staff has grown and flourished; and

WHEREAS, John Porter is a charter member of the Alexandria Crime Solvers, a member of the Executive Committee of Alexandria United Way, and a founding member of Alexandria Community Trust; and

WHEREAS, John Porter has served in many key professional offices, including as secretary of the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals (VASSP), president-elect and president of the VASSP, chairman and treasurer of the Northern and Patriot District Athletic Councils, and National Association of Secondary School Principals State Coordinator for Virginia; and

WHEREAS, John Porter believes that the rich and unique academic experiences garnered at T.C. Williams High School provide students with an additional educational opportunity, that of working, cooperating, and creating in a truly global setting; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend John L. Porter for his long and continuing service to the Alexandria City Public Schools; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to John L. Porter as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for his dedication to the young people of the Commonwealth and best wishes in his future endeavors.
