065785300WHEREAS, The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria is celebrating its 20th anniversary of enabling academically qualified students from T.C. Williams High School of Alexandria City to afford post-secondary education; and
WHEREAS, The Scholarship Fund was established in 1986 by a group of concerned citizens of Alexandria including Tim Elliott, Lou Cook and Judith Feaver, with the aid of Kitty Porterfield and the support of the Alexandria Superintendent of Schools, Bob Peebles, and the Alexandria School Board; and
WHEREAS, The Scholarship Fund is now expanding its focus, working toward a college completion program that would help recipients graduate and receive a degree; and
WHEREAS, The Scholarship Fund has grown, from initially awarding $10,000 annually to 10 students to presently awarding $500,000 annually to more than 400 students, overall awarding more than $3.6 million to over 2,300 students; and
WHEREAS, The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria is one of the first community-based college access programs in Virginia and one of the original members of the National College Network; and
WHEREAS, The Scholarship Fund garners scholarship contributions from business education partners, an annual telethon, and an annual gala, chaired in 2006 by Governor Mark R. Warner; and
WHEREAS, many Alexandria students are able to graduate debt-free from college due to The Scholarship Fund; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria on the occasion of its 20th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Board of Trustees for The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria as an expression of the General Assembly's gratitude to The Scholarship Fund for improving the educational level and quality of life of Alexandria's youth.
