WHEREAS, human trafficking refers to the clandestine transportation of persons for forced labor, sexual exploitation, or other illicit activities; and
WHEREAS, modern-day slavery is a problem not only in America but worldwide, especially in Vietnam where women and children are sold as slaves and exported to other countries; and
WHEREAS, Jackie Bong-Wright, founder, president, and CEO of the Vietnamese-American Voters Association recently raised $10,000, along with other Vietnamese American organizations, for two advocacy groups—the International Justice Mission and VietACT-Taiwan, which help victims of human trafficking; and
WHEREAS, Jackie Bong-Wright received her bachelor of arts degree from the University of Bordeaux, Vietnam, and a master of science in foreign service from Georgetown University and has used her education to help fellow Vietnamese begin new lives in America; and
WHEREAS, after her former husband was assassinated on the eve of becoming prime minister, Jackie Bong-Wright and her children were smuggled out of Saigon and settled in Northern Virginia; she remarried and has used survival skills learned in her struggles to assist others; and
WHEREAS, Jackie Bong-Wright has championed the cause of human trafficking victims, and through speaking engagements and fundraising, has brought needed attention to this serious international problem; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Jackie Bong-Wright on her determination to eradicate slavery; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Jackie Bong-Wright as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration and gratitude for her determined commitment to ending modern day slavery and aiding the victims of human trafficking.
