Celebrating the life of Eugene M. Cecil.

WHEREAS, Eugene M. Cecil of Grundy, respected citizen and revered community leader, died on February 20, 2006; and

WHEREAS, Eugene Cecil was born and raised in Heidelburg, Kentucky, and attended Kentucky Wesleyan College on a basketball scholarship before joining the United States Army Air Force during World War II; and

WHEREAS, after the war, Eugene Cecil returned to college at the University of Kentucky, graduating in 1949 with a bachelor of science degree in marketing; and

WHEREAS, Eugene Cecil married his lifelong mate, the former Adele Ammar, on July 12, 1949, and moved to Buchanan County in 1950; and

WHEREAS, Eugene Cecil worked for many years with the Ammar Brothers Department Store, became the owner of Genes Department Store, and worked as an insurance broker; and

WHEREAS, Eugene Cecil was actively involved and served in key leadership positions in numerous civic and professional organizations, including the Downtown Business Association, Kiwanis Club, the Sandy Valley Masonic Lodge #17 AF & AM, the Kazim Temple in Roanoke, the John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Grundy High School Athletic Boosters Club, the board of directors of the Buchanan County YMCA, and the Buchanan County Chamber of Commerce; and

WHEREAS, for his commitment to improving the quality of life for all residents of his community, Eugene Cecil was inducted into the Buchanan County Hall of Fame in 1995; and

WHEREAS, Eugene Cecil served the Town of Grundy as a member of the Town Council, vice mayor, and mayor, as well as a representative on the Department of Transportation and Industrial Development Authority and the Town of Grundy Flood Task Force; and

WHEREAS, Eugene Cecil was a devoted member of the Buchanan First Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and deacon for 55 years; and

WHEREAS, Eugene Cecil will be fondly remembered for his compassionate and generous nature and missed by his beloved wife and family, his numerous friends and admirers, and the citizens of Buchanan County; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a fine Virginia gentleman, Eugene M. Cecil; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Eugene M. Cecil as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
