Celebrating the life of Calvin Lindbergh Ritchie.

WHEREAS, Calvin Lindbergh Ritchie, a respected community leader, farmer, businessman, and devoted family man, died on February 26, 2006; and

WHEREAS, Calvin Ritchie was born on the family farm in Fauquier County on June 17, 1927, the son of Wilbur and Ethel Ritchie, and received his nickname, “Boots,” from his father because he liked to “slop around” the farm in tall rubber boots; and

WHEREAS, Boots Ritchie graduated from Bealeton High School in 1944 and began farming at an early age; and

WHEREAS, in 1973 Boots Ritchie opened the Fauquier Grain Company to serve the farmers of southern Fauquier County; and

WHEREAS, Boots Ritchie actively supported Fauquier County agriculture through many worthwhile events and was involved in land conservation and agricultural preservation, having served as one of the original members of the Agricultural Advisory Committee; and

WHEREAS, a member of many philanthropic organizations, Boots Ritchie was a founder of People Helping People of Fauquier County, a corporation designed to offer one-time assistance for people struggling with unforeseen circumstances such as natural disasters, illness, or sudden financial reversal; and

WHEREAS, Boots Ritchie served on the board of advisors for The Fauquier Institute, a nonprofit policy organization focusing on local issues; and

WHEREAS, Boots Ritchie was recognized as the Fauquier County Citizen of the Year in 1994 and was chosen to carry the Olympic Torch; and

WHEREAS, a committed Christian and faithful member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church, Boots Ritchie served on the Building and Grounds Committee, and as the  videographer for worship services, and he spent the last months of his life raising funds for the expansion of a Christian school in Fauquier County; and

WHEREAS, Boots Ritchie was a respected community leader with a strong work ethic, an intense commitment to assisting his fellow man, and a devotion and dedication  to making Fauquier County a better place in which to live and raise a family; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Calvin Lindbergh Ritchie, a cherished civic leader who will be greatly missed by his family and countless friends; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Calvin Lindbergh Ritchie as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
