WHEREAS, Susan Aheron Magill has been Chief of Staff for United States Senator John Warner for 18 years and has worked with the Senator for 24 years; and

WHEREAS, called an exceptional professional by Senator Warner, Susan Magill has demonstrated great competence, tact, integrity, and political savvy; and

WHEREAS, Susan Magill has been a force in the rise of the Virginia Republican majority and assisted Senator Warner in attaining senior status in the United States Senate; and

WHEREAS, Susan Magill skillfully managed a Senate staff of 35 people with a budget of $1.7 million and coordinated the agendas and schedules between personal office staff and the staff of the Senate Armed Services Committee, which Senator Warner has served as Chairman, or ranking member,  from 1999 until the present; and

WHEREAS, Susan Magill played a similar role for four years when Senator Warner was Chairman of the Senate Rules Committee, and she effectively coordinated the Senate staffs and campaign staffs for the 1990, 1996, and 2002 elections; and

WHEREAS, Susan Magill served as Executive Director of the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies for the second inauguration of President William J.  Clinton, and she expertly managed hundreds of Congressional staff, federal employees, military, and volunteers to coordinate the swearing-in ceremony and an inaugural luncheon hosted by Congressional leadership; and

WHEREAS, at the inaugural ceremony, Susan Magill had the honor of leading President Clinton down the Capitol steps for his swearing-in; and

WHEREAS, Susan Magill is a Roanoke native and a graduate of The College of William and Mary, has represented the United States by participating in a political exchange program with the People's Republic of China, and in 1993 was selected to participate in the John C. Stennis Congressional Staff Fellows Program that recognizes outstanding leadership; and

WHEREAS, Susan Magill is the second woman in the history of The College of William and Mary to serve as Rector, a position she will hold until June 30, 2006; and

WHEREAS, other public service positions for which Susan Magill has given her time and expertise include the Mount Vernon Board of Visitors, the Board of Directors for the American Council of Young Political Leaders, and the Advisory Board of the Mount Vernon Ladies Association; and

WHEREAS, in 1988 Washingtonian magazine named Susan Magill one of the 100 most powerful women in Washington, and she is known for being a pioneer in the advancement of opportunities for women; and

WHEREAS, Susan Magill resigned as Chief of Staff for Senator John Warner, ending a remarkable political career; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Susan Aheron Magill on her exemplary service to Senator John Warner and the Commonwealth; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Susan Aheron Magill as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for her many accomplishments.
