2006 SESSION
WHEREAS, United States Army National Guard Captain Lowell Thomas Miller II, a 1993 graduate of the Virginia Military Institute, died in the line of duty on August 31, 2005, in Iskandariyah, Iraq; and
WHEREAS, Lowell Thomas “Tommy” Miller was born in Flint, Michigan, and received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the Virginia Military Institute; and
WHEREAS, Captain Miller was assigned to the United States Army National Guard 1st Battalion, 155 Infantry Regiment based in McComb, Mississippi, and desired to be deployed to Iraq; and
WHEREAS, Captain Miller was in charge of training a group of Iraqi soldiers, an important duty he deeply believed in, and felt that they had become good soldiers; he was accompanying these Iraqi troops on a night mission when his team came under enemy attack; and
WHEREAS, Captain Miller was posthumously promoted to major and received a Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his bravery and leadership during combat operations; and
WHEREAS, Major Miller’s service, with full military honors, was held at the Columbarium at Arlington National Cemetery on September 20, 2005; and
WHEREAS, Major Miller was devoted to his wife Angela; his two beloved and beautiful daughters, Danielle and Alexandra; his wonderful stepchildren Jessica and Jordan; and his loving parents, brother, sister, and other family members; he will be fondly remembered for his abiding faith in God and love for his country; and
WHEREAS, Major Miller’s death is a reminder of the perils faced daily by the thousands of young Americans who serve in our armed forces overseas and whose devotion to duty places them in harm's way; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a courageous and patriotic Virginian, Major Lowell Thomas Miller II; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Major Lowell Thomas Miller II as an expression of the high regard in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly and the citizens of Virginia.
