2006 SESSION
065859308WHEREAS, Lauren Elizabeth Burns, a graduate student from Salem, died on January 8, 2006, at the age of 22; and
WHEREAS, Lauren Burns, a former drum major with the Salem High School Marching Band, was beloved by her former bandmates and in remembrance of her, the band wore her initials on the back of their helmets at the 2006 gubernatorial inauguration; and
WHEREAS, while at Salem High School, Lauren Burns was a high school volleyball player, track team member, summer swim league member, worked as an animal caretaker at Salem Animal Hospital, and was known for her level-headed nature and leadership abilities; and
WHEREAS, a 2005 graduate of The College of William and Mary, Lauren Burns earned a bachelor of science in biology and environmental science, and while a student there her passion for horses led her to be president of the Equestrian Team; and
WHEREAS, Lauren Burns worked at the Flower Cupboard of Williamsburg, where she was loved by the staff and the customers, and was known to bake cheesecakes for her friends; and
WHEREAS, interest in wildlife and a love of birds led Lauren Burns to Teton Science Schools, a one-year graduate-level teaching practicum and academic program in environmental education and the natural sciences in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where she worked with the Grand Teton National Park staff and park visitors, led map talks and geology hikes, and staged an exhibit at the Maude Nobel Cabin at Menor's Ferry; and
WHEREAS, Lauren Burns was a sincere, enthusiastic person who loved to laugh and dance and was in the midst of pursuing her dream to become an environmental educator; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Lauren Elizabeth Burns, who will be greatly missed by her parents, brother, grandparents, and other family members and many friends; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Lauren Elizabeth Burns as an expression of the high regard in which her memory is held by the members of the General Assembly and the citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
