HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 440
Commending Tom Olaisen.

WHEREAS, Tom Olaisen is recognized for his 52 years of outstanding service with the Boys and Girls Club of the Virginia Peninsula; and

WHEREAS, the mission of the Boys and Girls Club of the Virginia Peninsula is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens; and

WHEREAS, Tom Olaisen joined the Boys and Girls Club of the Virginia Peninsula as the education director from 1954 to 1958; served as program director from 1959 to 1965 and as executive director from 1965 to 1996; and since that time has served as director of special events; and

WHEREAS, affectionately known in the Peninsula community as “Mr. Tom,” Tom Olaisen has provided superb leadership and tremendous support, as well as serving as a positive role model for over 100,000 boys and girls across Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Tom Olaisen was instrumental in the development and implementation of the Boys Club model program that is still in use today; and

WHEREAS, in support of all of the youth of Virginia and the many adults who are committed to mentoring  them, Tom Olaisen has given generously of his time and immense talents to the Boys and Girls Club Area Council, the Boys and Girls Club Professional Association, and the United Way; and

WHEREAS, Tom Olaisen received the Bronze Keystone Award from the Boys and Girls Clubs of America for his many years of dedication to the youth of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Tom Olaisen and the Boys and Girls Club of the Virginia Peninsula provide a safe place to learn and grow, ongoing relationships with caring adult professionals, life-enhancing programs, character development experiences, and hope and opportunity for numerous Peninsula children and their families; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Tom Olaisen for his outstanding service to the Boys and Girls Club of the Virginia Peninsula; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Tom Olaisen as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for his exceptional dedication to the young people of the Commonwealth.
