Celebrating the life of Deborah June Mason.

WHEREAS, Deborah June Mason of Altavista, a revered and beloved Latin teacher at Altavista High School, died on February 11, 2006; and

WHEREAS, born on November 15, 1947, in Campbell County, Deborah Mason graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history, became certified to teach Latin at Randolph-Macon Women's College in Lynchburg, and completed classes towards a master's degree at the University of Georgia; and

WHEREAS, Deborah Mason was the inspirational sponsor of the Latin Club, the Hi-Y, and the Model General Assembly at the high school; and

WHEREAS, Deborah Mason and her club members went out into the world to help their fellow citizens in need, working with many local and national organizations such as the American Red Cross' Tsunami Relief, DAWN, Habitat for Humanity and the Hurricane Katrina Relief program; and

WHEREAS, committed to the teaching of classical culture and of the classics, Deborah Mason was a chairperson of the Virginia Classical League and worked with the National Classical League; she was also a member and secretary of the Classical Association of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Deborah Mason served as a member of the board of the Virginia YMCA and was honored with its Outstanding Service Award in 1991; and

WHEREAS, Deborah Mason was honored as Campbell County’s Teacher of the Year in 1994 and the Central Virginia Governor’s School Outstanding Educator in 1995; and

WHEREAS, an active and devoted member of Saint Victoria Catholic Church in Hurt, Deborah Mason was a gifted musician who played the organ and piano and had a lovely singing voice; and

WHEREAS, during her 22 years as a Latin teacher at Altavista High School, Deborah Mason touched the lives of countless students and encouraged them to contribute to their community and aspire to their full academic potential and a meaningful life; and

WHEREAS, Deborah Mason will be fondly remembered for her zest for life and her devotion to education and will be missed by her family, her students, and her numerous friends and colleagues; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an outstanding teacher and fine Virginian, Deborah June Mason; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Deborah June Mason as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
