2006 SESSION
WHEREAS, John Edward Thomas II, a respected citizen and outstanding public servant with Prince William County, died on January 30, 2006; and
WHEREAS, John “Johnny” Thomas was born on February 11, 1971, graduated from Gar-Field High School, and shortly thereafter began his career with Prince William County with the Park Authority; and
WHEREAS, Johnny Thomas was a member of the Dumfries Volunteer Rescue Squad and in 2001 received a Medal of Honor for rescuing a victim from a burning house; and
WHEREAS, in 2002 Johnny Thomas joined the Department of Fire and Rescue, received the Team Member of the Month award in 2003, and was promoted to Technician II in 2004; and
WHEREAS, Johnny Thomas received recognition for his excellent performance in animal rescue, his initiative under the most trying circumstances, and his involvement in Take our Children to Work Day activities; and
WHEREAS, committed to the well-being of his fellow citizens, especially children, Johnny Thomas generously gave his time and talents as a camp counselor for two summers at the Virginia Burn Camp for Children; and
WHEREAS, Johnny Thomas worked in Gulfport, Mississippi, where he met his wife, prior to his Fire and Rescue career and had relatives in the area affected by Hurricane Katrina; and as one of the dedicated members of the Northern Virginia Fire and Rescue Task Force, a multi-jurisdictional team that was deployed to assist the devastated state in the aftermath of the hurricane, his relief efforts were especially meaningful; and
WHEREAS, Johnny Thomas will be fondly remembered for his professionalism and love for his family and will be missed by his wife Michelle “Mickey” Thomas, also a member of the Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue, his loving family, and his numerous friends and colleagues; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an exemplary public servant and outstanding Virginian, John Edward Thomas II; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of John Edward Thomas II as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
