Commending the Lifetime Learning Institute of Northern Virginia on the occasion of its 10th anniversary.

WHEREAS, the Lifetime Learning Institute of Northern Virginia celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2006 and is recognized for providing outstanding educational programs for the great enjoyment and enrichment of the citizens of Northern Virginia; and

WHEREAS, incorporated on March 13, 1996, the Lifetime Learning Institute (LLI) is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing continuing educational opportunities to older adults of all backgrounds and income levels; and

WHEREAS, membership to the LLI is open to individuals over 50 years old who recognize that the “need for learning and curiosity never retires”; and

WHEREAS, the LLI is one of over 200 organizations around the country affiliated with the Elderhostel Institute Network and is sponsored by the Annandale campus of the Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC), operating almost exclusively on its own resources of membership dues and contributions of time and talent by dedicated members; and

WHEREAS, the LLI has an all-volunteer faculty, NVCC professors and others from the community, who are experts in various fields; and

WHEREAS, during the first two years of operation, the LLI offered approximately 50 courses and since 1999 has increased its academic classes to 80 or 90 during the year in                     subjects including history, health, finance, religion, science, and government and politics on the local, state, and federal levels; and

WHEREAS, since its founding in 1996 with 38 members, the LLI has grown over the years to over 360 members; there has been little need for advertising due to referrals by satisfied life-learners who help maintain membership at a high level; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the Lifetime Learning Institute of Northern Virginia on the occasion of its 10th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Lifetime Learning Institute of Northern Virginia as an expression of the General Assembly’s best wishes and gratitude for its dedication to our vibrant older Virginians and their quest for continuing knowledge and enrichment.
