HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 373
Celebrating the life of Lieutenant Commander Erik S. Kristensen.

WHEREAS, Lieutenant Commander Erik S. Kristensen, United States Navy, was killed in action near Asadabad, Afghanistan, in Kunar Province; and

WHEREAS, Erik S. Kristensen, a Navy SEAL stationed in Norfolk, Virginia, lived in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and is survived by his parents, RADM Edward K. Kristensen, USN (Ret.) and Suzanne Carrico Samsel Kristensen of Washington, DC; and

WHEREAS, Erik S. Kristensen graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1995, with a great love of the arts and literature and fluency in French; and

WHEREAS, Erik S. Kristensen became a SEAL in 2001 after graduating from Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training with class 233 at Naval Special Warfare Center, Coronado, California; and

WHEREAS, Erik S. Kristensen, one of a select few service members to be chosen as an Olmsted Foundation Scholar, planned to begin a two-year study abroad at the Institute of Political Studies in Paris; and

WHEREAS, Erik S. Kristensen distinguished himself as a Navy SEAL earning multiple decorations during his Navy career, including the Bronze Star (with “V” for Valor), Purple Heart, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2 awards), Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal (2 awards), Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (2 awards), Navy Expert Rifleman Medal and Navy Expert Pistol Shot Medal; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a courageous and patriotic American, Lieutenant Commander Erik S. Kristensen; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Lieutenant Commander Erik S. Kristensen, United States Navy, as an expression of the high regard in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly and the citizens of Virginia and the nation.
