WHEREAS, Carolyn A. Flaningam, formerly of Annandale and a dedicated educator in the Fairfax County Public Schools for many years, died January 27, 2006; and
WHEREAS, a native of Greensburg, Indiana, Carolyn Flaningam graduated from Purdue University with bachelor's and master's degrees in education; and
WHEREAS, after teaching in Indiana for several years, Carolyn Flaningam moved with her husband to Northern Virginia in 1974 and began her exemplary teaching career with the Fairfax County Public Schools; and
WHEREAS, an outstanding and gifted educator, Carolyn Flaningam taught at Holmes Intermediate School, as well as Annandale, West Springfield, Herndon, Lake Braddock, and Robinson High Schools; and
WHEREAS, Carolyn Flaningam taught numerous advanced placement courses, served as department chair of social studies at Robinson High School, and taught in the International Baccalaureate program at Herndon and Lake Braddock High Schools; and
WHEREAS, Carolyn Flaningam loved life, had a very infectious laugh, and her students joked about taping her memorable laughter to take along with them to college for inspiration in trying times; and
WHEREAS, Carolyn Flaningam will be fondly remembered for her devotion to loved ones, her love of decorating and travel, and her generous and compassionate nature; and
WHEREAS, Carolyn Flaningam will be missed by her beloved family, her students and colleagues, numerous friends and admirers, and the congregation of Providence Presbyterian Church in Fairfax; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a dedicated teacher and fine Virginian, Carolyn A. Flaningam; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Carolyn A. Flaningam as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
