2006 SESSION
WHEREAS, Ed Grimes of Woodland Academy won Honorable Mention in his age group in the National Safe Boating Council essay writing contest on “Why I Wear My Life Jacket”; and
WHEREAS, students from around the United States participated in the writing contest, and Ed Grimes was one of only three Virginia winners; Holly Sanford and Jordan Baughan were other winners in their age groups; and
WHEREAS, the essay contest, sponsored by the National Safe Boating Council, was open to students age 4 to 15; and
WHEREAS, Joanne Nelson, Woodland Academy’s Life Skills and Computer teacher, encouraged students in grades 4-8 to enter the contest and use the computer lab to research and compose their essays; the lesson was intended to acquaint students with life jackets and boat safety and to allow students to create their own essays on the computer; and
WHEREAS, at the Academic Night award ceremony, Wayne Ploger, Flotilla Commander, Flotilla 3-10, presented a letter of congratulations and Coast Guard Eagle pins to the students and framed Certificates of Appreciation to Woodland Academy and Ms. Nelson in recognition of their “Recreational Boating Safety Partnership with the Auxiliary and commitment to teaching life skills so important in the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula”; and
WHEREAS, Woodland Academy draws students from the Northern Neck and Essex County and has a history of encouraging students to learn about safety on the local waters; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Ed Grimes for winning Honorable Mention in his age group in the National Safe Boating Council essay writing contest; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Ed Grimes as an expression of the General Assembly's best wishes and congratulations.
