Commending Patricia Morrell.

WHEREAS, Patricia Morrell is honored with the Virginia Health Care Foundation’s 2005 Unsung Hero Award for volunteers for her outstanding service to the citizens of Hampton Roads; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Health Care Foundation (VHCF) is a public-private partnership established to improve access to primary health care for Virginia’s uninsured and medically underserved citizens initiated by the General Assembly’s Joint Commission on Health Care in 1992; and

WHEREAS, in the past two years, Patricia "Pat" Morrell has volunteered to drive senior citizens to 150 health appointments, logging nearly 5,000 miles on her specially adapted van; and

WHEREAS, Pat Morrell performs her duties with great confidence, compassion, and good cheer; and the fact that she is handicapped as a result of spina bifida and unable to use her legs makes her valuable contributions even more commendable; and

WHEREAS, Pat Morrell volunteers for the Peninsula Agency on Aging, which operates the medical transportation (MedTran) program that works with other community agencies in Hampton, Newport News, Williamsburg, Poquoson, James City County, and York County to improve the quality of life for older Virginians; and

WHEREAS, Pat Morrell treats her passengers with great respect and patience, once waiting over four hours for a rider who was being fitted for a prosthesis; and

WHEREAS, as a dedicated advocate for MedTran, Pat Morrell helped generate $46,000 in funding from the United Way of Virginia Peninsula; and

WHEREAS, Pat Morrell is an inspiration to all she meets and deserving of statewide recognition for her exceptional commitment and outstanding service; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Patricia Morrell as a recipient of the Virginia Health Care Foundation’s 2005 Unsung Hero Award for volunteers; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Patricia Morrell as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for her dedication to the citizens of Hampton Roads.
