2006 SESSION
WHEREAS, Dr. Jack Roper, distinguished scholar and professor of history at Emory & Henry College, has been named the 2005 Virginia Professor of the Year; and
WHEREAS, the Professor of the Year honor is awarded by the Carnegie Foundation and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education; and
WHEREAS, Jack Roper is the sixth professor in 17 years from Emory & Henry College to win the prestigious award; and
WHEREAS, Jack Roper has been an outstanding professor with the history department at Emory & Henry College since 1988, and his many contributions to the college, as well as to the education and future success of his students, are immeasurable; and
WHEREAS, an accomplished author, Jack Roper has published definitive works on the lives and accomplishments of Southern historians U. B. Phillips and C. Vann Woodward and playwright Paul Green; and
WHEREAS, Jack Roper's extensive and fascinating research has established him as a foremost authority on approaches to the study of Southern history; and
WHEREAS, a self-proclaimed "ham" who does whatever it takes to engage his students, Jack Roper adamantly believes that "you can't teach unless people will interact with you, it's a two-way process"; and
WHEREAS, Jack Roper uses the probing Socratic method of teaching, constantly encouraging his students to question and use their curiosity and their minds; he brings poetry, play-acting, and philosophical dialogue and interaction into the mix of discussion and debate; and
WHEREAS, Jack Roper not only has a passion for teaching history, but he is also committed to empowering his students through a greater knowledge of liberal arts and the world and an advanced ability to think and problem-solve; and
WHEREAS, a revered professor and mentor to his students, Jack Roper is a most deserving recipient of the 2005 Virginia Professor of the Year honor; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate Dr. Jack Roper as the 2005 Virginia Professor of the Year, awarded by the Carnegie Foundation and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Dr. Jack Roper as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration and respect for his exemplary talents and his dedication to the students of Emory & Henry College.
