HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 330
Commending Griff Graves.

WHEREAS, Griff Graves of the Abingdon High School Falcons was the 2005 Virginia High School League Group AA cross country individual state champion; and

WHEREAS, the cross country state finals were held on November 12, 2005, at the Great Meadows field in Plains, Virginia; and

WHEREAS, in the 5K cross country event, Griff Graves ran behind a small pack of runners at the beginning of the race, then he and Christiansburg senior John Horst broke through to battle for the lead for the next 1.5 miles; and

WHEREAS, Griff Graves then took the lead and held it, handily winning the Group AA individual state crown in a time of 15 minutes and 51 seconds over the 5K course; and

WHEREAS, Coach Don Cumbow had great praise for Griff Graves, an Alabama transfer student, who is the coach's first boys' cross country champion and only the second since 1974; and

WHEREAS, Griff Graves has beaten Christiansburg High School star John Horst in their last three out of four races; and

WHEREAS, Griff Graves has impressively won nine races this season, losing only two, with his worst finish a fourth place at the Wendy’s Invitational, a tough competitive meet; and

WHEREAS, the state championship individual crown was Griff Grave’s fifth straight cross country win; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Griff Graves on his well-deserved honor as the Group AA high school state cross country champion; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Griff Graves as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his stellar performance and an outstanding 2005 cross country season.
