2006 SESSION
WHEREAS, Wallace L. Shumaker, the president of the Buckingham County Volunteer Rescue Squad, died on August 6, 2005, just hours after he had saved the life of a woman who was involved in an automobile accident; and
WHEREAS, a member of the Buckingham County Volunteer Rescue Squad since 1984, Wallace Shumaker was one of its most respected members and was widely known in the Buckingham community for his volunteer efforts; and
WHEREAS, also a member of the Dillwyn Volunteer Fire Department, Wallace Shumaker was a 25-year employee of the Kyanite Mining Corporation, where he was a plant supervisor; and
WHEREAS, among his many accomplishments with the Buckingham County Volunteer Rescue Squad, Wallace Shumaker was instrumental in the construction and outfitting of the squad's new building, a 6,500 square foot facility that opened in the fall of 2004; and
WHEREAS, in many ways the face and the voice of the Buckingham County Volunteer Rescue Squad, Wallace Shumaker was an effective fundraiser for the squad and served as the squad's liaison with the University of Virginia Hospital and the state EMS Office; and
WHEREAS, Wallace Shumaker's exceptional dedication to the welfare of his fellow citizens earned him the respect and affection of the citizens of Buckingham, and he was the first recipient of the Buckingham County Chamber of Commerce's Volunteer of the Year Award in 2003; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the untimely loss of a remarkably talented and dedicated citizen of Buckingham County, Wallace L. Shumaker; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Wallace L. Shumaker as an expression of the respect in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
