Commending Support to Eliminate Poverty on the occasion of its 40th anniversary.

WHEREAS, Support to Eliminate Poverty celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2006; and

WHEREAS, Franklin County Community Action was chartered in 1966 as the official antipoverty agency for Franklin County and launched several programs, including Youth Employment Training, Adult Education, and a Clothes Closet; and

WHEREAS, in 1990 Franklin County Community Action changed its name to Support to Eliminate Poverty to coincide with the agency's new directive to include serving Patrick County; and

WHEREAS, Support to Eliminate Poverty currently provides 19 programs that serve the needs of impoverished citizens, including the Head Start program, housing and weatherization programs, support services programs, and youth education services programs; and

WHEREAS, in 2005 Support to Eliminate Poverty delivered more than 16,000 meals to seniors, provided special education classes for students, weatherized 42 homes, provided emergency services to 182 families, assisted 50 families in preparing their income taxes, and assisted its first homeless client to obtain housing through its new Tenant Based Rental Assistance program; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Support to Eliminate Poverty for its valuable service to the citizens of Franklin and Patrick Counties; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Support to Eliminate Poverty as an expression of the General Assembly's gratitude for its services and best wishes for future success in its mission.
