WHEREAS, the 2005 Douglas S. Freeman High School girls' volleyball team capped a dominant season by winning the Virginia High School League Group AAA state volleyball championship; and
WHEREAS, the Douglas S. Freeman Rebels, from Henrico County, finished the season with Colonial District and Central Region volleyball championships to go with their state title; and
WHEREAS, the 2005 Freeman Rebels earned the distinction of being the school's first girls' volleyball state champions; and
WHEREAS, a perennial contender for state honors, the Freeman Rebels defeated Stone Bridge High School of Loudoun County, 3-1, in the state quarterfinals, then qualified for the finals with a 3-1 victory over Floyd Kellam High School of Virginia Beach; and
WHEREAS, in the state championship match, the Freeman girls faced a familiar adversary, Colonial District rival Deep Run High School, and the Rebels prevailed in a close match by the score of 3-2; and
WHEREAS, the Freeman Rebels—Ellie Balakhanlou, Kelsey Burke, Kendall Burke, Catherine Hanners, Lindsay Huffman, Caroline Huffman, Mary Jones, Anne Lutkenhaus, Ashley Manley, Molly Marrin, Taylor Martin, Anne Stewart Milligan, Jane Murphy, Anne Stewart Nichols, Hillary Parsons, Rachelle Rasley, and Meg Young—were coached by Joe Sullivan and assistant coaches Jon Hanners, Dicky Hulcher, Jennifer Hulcher, and Steve Bailey; and
WHEREAS, the outstanding performance of the 2005 Rebels girls' volleyball team is a tribute to the hard work, determination, and teamwork of the athletes; the leadership of the coaching staff; and the support of the students, faculty, and staff of Douglas S. Freeman High School; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the 2005 Rebels of Douglas S. Freeman High School on their Group AAA state volleyball championship; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Joe Sullivan in honor of the championship performance of the 2005 Douglas S. Freeman High School girls' volleyball team.
