068412332WHEREAS, Bud R. Calvert, respected citizen and pastor of the Fairfax Baptist Temple, is recognized for his 35 years of ministry and outstanding service to the residents of Fairfax County and surrounding communities; and
WHEREAS, a Virginia native, Bud Calvert grew up in Arlington, and after a tour of duty in the United States Army, graduated from Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina; and
WHEREAS, Bud Calvert returned to Northern Virginia in October 1970 and founded the church that is today Fairfax Baptist Temple; and
WHEREAS, with a congregation of 1,000 members, the local ministries of Fairfax Baptist Temple include Sunday morning services, Sunday and Wednesday evening services and a Christ-centered school of education for more than 280 students in kindergarten through 12th grade; there are also classes taught on Sunday morning in the Korean and Portuguese languages; and
WHEREAS, committed to expanding the ministry to meet the needs of a growing membership, Bud Calvert founded the Northeast Baptist Temple in Washington, D.C., in July 1977; and
WHEREAS, under the leadership of Bud Calvert, the Fairfax Baptist Temple helps to support approximately 300 missionary families and contributes to a number of missions projects, contributing $9.1 million to the work of evangelism worldwide; and
WHEREAS, Bud Calvert serves on the board of the Ambassador Baptist College in North Carolina and the Baptist World Missions, headquartered in Alabama; and
WHEREAS, Bud Calvert leads a pastoral and missionary internship program for men and college students and has commissioned and ordained over 30 men from the Fairfax Baptist Temple to be missionaries or pastors of new independent Baptist churches; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Bud R. Calvert for his 35 years of leadership and compassionate ministry to the congregation of the Fairfax Baptist Temple; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Bud R. Calvert as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for his outstanding service to the residents of Fairfax County and the Commonwealth.
