HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 268
Commending the Williamsburg-Jamestown Airport on the occasion of its 35th anniversary.

WHEREAS, the Williamsburg-Jamestown Airport, operated by industrious co-owners Jean and Larry Waltrip, celebrated its 35th anniversary in November 2005; and

WHEREAS, to celebrate the anniversary, the Williamsburg-Jamestown Airport was honored with the Captain John Smith Award, sponsored by the James City County Board of Supervisors, the Economic Development Authority, and the Office of Economic Development for James City County; the award is given to businesses, organizations, and individuals that have made significant contributions to the county and its citizens; and

WHEREAS, established in 1970, the Williamsburg-Jamestown Airport is well-managed, friendly, and provides a less stressful environment that appeals to private commuters, business professionals, and at times even a famous celebrity, dignitary, or statesman; Elizabeth and Bob Dole, Robert Redford, Elizabeth Taylor, Jesse Jackson, and presidents and governors have been among the many who have landed at the private/public-use airport; and

WHEREAS, Jean and Larry Waltrip and the Williamsburg-Jamestown Airport have received many awards over the years, including a certificate of appreciation for contributions to the economic development of James City County in 1989, the award of excellence from the James City County Planning Commission in 1990, and the Chamber of Commerce Corporate Citizen of the Year award in 1998; the Waltrips were inducted into the Virginia Aviation Hall of Fame in 2001; and

WHEREAS, Jean and Larry Waltrip have been strong supporters of the community for 35 years and their Williamsburg-Jamestown Airport creates a wonderful first impression for travelers arriving in James City County; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the Williamsburg-Jamestown Airport on the occasion of its 35th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Jean and Larry Waltrip and the Williamsburg-Jamestown Airport as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation for its outstanding service.
