068431224WHEREAS, the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities (APVA Preservation Virginia) was founded in 1889 and is the oldest statewide preservation organization in the nation; and
WHEREAS, APVA Preservation Virginia is dedicated to preserving and promoting the Commonwealth’s irreplaceable historic structures, landscapes, collections, communities, and archaeological sites; and
WHEREAS, APVA Preservation Virginia ensures the vitality of the Commonwealth’s distinctive heritage, resulting in cultural, economic, and educational benefits for the public by providing leadership, expertise, influence, policy, programs, and services to the public and special audiences and by serving as a resource for other preservation organizations and efforts; and
WHEREAS, APVA Preservation Virginia achieves this mission through partnering with the many local and regional preservation and historic societies across the Commonwealth in an effort to ensure that preservation is seen as an economic, aesthetic, and quality-of-life benefit to communities; and
WHEREAS, APVA Preservation Virginia has been responsible for the preservation and interpretation of such national historic landmarks as Jamestown Island, the Cape Henry Lighthouse, the John Marshall House, the Mary Washington House, Scotchtown, Bacon’s Castle, the Ellen Glasgow House, the Eastville Courthouse, Smithfield Plantation, and many other properties listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places; and
WHEREAS, APVA Preservation Virginia, in anticipation of the 400th anniversary of the landing at Jamestown, has launched an extensive archaeological excavation at Historic Jamestowne, the original site of the first permanent English settlement in North America; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities for its invaluable contributions to the preservation of the Commonwealth’s historic heritage; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities as an expression of the General Assembly's gratitude for its outstanding service to the citizens of the Commonwealth.
