Celebrating the life of Specialist Fourth Class Jared William Kubasak.

WHEREAS, United States Army Specialist Fourth Class Jared William Kubasak, aged 25, a native of Rocky Mount, was killed in the line of duty in Iraq on December 12, 2005; and

WHEREAS, Specialist Fourth Class Kubasak grew up in Rocky Mount, graduated from Franklin County High School in 1999, and enlisted in the United States Army in May 2000; and

WHEREAS, a member of the 54th Engineering Battalion through December 2004, Specialist Fourth Class Kubasak began his second tour of duty in Iraq in March 2005 and volunteered for a more frontline position with the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment; and

WHEREAS, on December 12, 2005, Specialist Fourth Class Kubasak's unit was on patrol near Baghdad, when the armored vehicle in which he was riding was struck by an improvised explosive device; and

WHEREAS, Specialist Fourth Class Kubasak was the first Franklin County soldier to become a casualty in the Iraq War; and

WHEREAS, Specialist Fourth Class Kubasak was scheduled to return to Kuwait in February 2006 and return to the United States and his base at Fort Carson, Colorado, in March; and

WHEREAS, Specialist Fourth Class Kubasak was honored with a full military funeral and his parents were presented with the six medals that he received during his military service and as a result of his ultimate sacrifice so that others might be free—a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star Medal, an Army Commendation Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, and the Iraq Campaign Medal; and

WHEREAS, Specialist Fourth Class Kubasak, an only son, was deeply devoted to his loving parents and other family members and numerous friends; and

WHEREAS, Specialist Fourth Class Kubasak's death is a reminder of the perils faced daily by the thousands of young Americans who serve in our armed forces overseas and whose devotion to duty places them in harm's way; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a courageous and patriotic Virginian, Specialist Fourth Class Jared William Kubasak; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Specialist Fourth Class Jared William Kubasak as an expression of the high regard in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly and the citizens of the Commonwealth.
