HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 243
Commending Shelby McIntosh.

WHEREAS, Shelby McIntosh, an eighth-grade honors student at Robinson Secondary School in Fairfax County, won the 2005 Senior Division title in the Pre-Teen Virginia competition held September 2005 in Williamsburg; and

WHEREAS, the Pre-Teen Virginia competition is part of the Pre-Teen America Scholarship and Recognition Program, an event designed to recognize America's outstanding pre-teens and to promote high morals, standards of excellence, fellowship, family values, and social development; and

WHEREAS, during the Pre-Teen Virginia competition, the contestants are evaluated in seven categories—academic achievement, school honors and activities, volunteer service, personal development, communicative ability, general knowledge, and on-stage presentation; and

WHEREAS, an articulate speaker and excellent student, Shelby McIntosh won the optional senior speech competition on the topic, What the word achievement means to me, and earned the highest score on the general knowledge test; and

WHEREAS, an enthusiastic and poised competitor, Shelby McIntosh was a past winner in 2001 of the Junior Division title in the Pre-Teen Virginia competition; and

WHEREAS, as the Senior Division winner in the Pre-Teen Virginia competition, Shelby McIntosh qualified for the 2006 Pre-Teen America National competition, to be held in Birmingham, Alabama, on July 2-7, 2006, where she will compete for educational bonds, prizes, and other awards; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Shelby McIntosh on her victory in the Pre-Teen Virginia competition; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Shelby McIntosh as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for her many accomplishments and best wishes for success in the Pre-Teen America National competition.
