HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 237
Commending Dewberry on the occasion of its 50th anniversary.

WHEREAS, Dewberry, an outstanding national professional services company headquartered in Fairfax County, celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2006; and

WHEREAS, since its founding in 1965 in Arlington, Virginia, by Sidney O. Dewberry, the Dewberry firm has provided public and private entities with services in program management, planning, engineering, architecture, surveying, geographic information services, and the environmental sciences; and

WHEREAS, Dewberry, a privately held company, employs over 1,800 professionals and staff working in 30 offices located in 14 states including nine Virginia Dewberry offices located in Arlington, Culpeper, Danville, Fairfax, Fredericksburg, Leesburg, Manassas, Richmond, and Winchester, employing nearly half of the company's total workforce; and

WHEREAS, Dewberry's innovative land-development process is responsible for the birth of neighborhoods, town centers, mixed-use and institutional developments, corporate and educational campuses, bridges, highways, and major transportation improvements as well as the upgrading of transit and rail systems, the revitalizing of ports and harbors, and the modernization of airports; and

WHEREAS, Dewberry has designed the revitalization of urban cores and historic downtown districts, rehabilitated parks and marinas, restored wetlands and other natural habitats, and rebuilt towns and neighborhoods damaged by natural disasters; and

WHEREAS, by championing progressive initiatives such as public-private partnerships, privately financed infrastructure, design-build, and applications of advanced technology, Dewberry enables communities to grow and prosper; and

WHEREAS, Dewberry responds to the needs of the community and encourages public involvement in critical community projects by working closely with clients, stakeholders, and government agencies to protect manmade and natural resources throughout Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Dewberry projects in Virginia have included the Lansdowne Executive Conference Resort in Loudoun County; George Mason University’s Prince William Institute; projects for the expansion and renovation of the University of Virginia; design of the Dulles Greenway, a 14-mile toll road extension; the Route 110 Bypass, which increases the physical security of the Pentagon; and the Route 28 improvements under Virginia’s Public-Private Transportation Act; and

WHEREAS, Dewberry employees generously give their time and immense talents to numerous local, national, and international relief organizations and worthy civic causes including support for the tsunami victims and the countless Americans devastated by Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita as well as the Dewberry-sponsored Dean Meyers Scholarship fund; and

WHEREAS, the vision and leadership of Sidney O. Dewberry, the board of directors, company executives, and the hard work and dedication of the professionals and staff of Dewberry have provided the citizens of the Commonwealth with immeasurable contributions to the design of places in which we live, work, play, and explore; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Dewberry on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to representatives of Dewberry, on behalf of all of its employees, as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for its commitment to improving the quality of life for all Virginians.
