2006 SESSION
WHEREAS, Daniella Jones, a senior at Salem High School, was honored as the 2006 Eastern Regional winner in Dominion's Strong Men and Women: Excellence in Leadership student writing contest; and
WHEREAS, for 15 years, Dominion, along with the educational community, has offered the Strong Men and Women: Excellence in Leadership series to inspire young people to achieve their dreams; and
WHEREAS, the Strong Men and Women series is a unique program by Dominion established to provide youth with positive African-American role models whose accomplishments and determination demonstrate true excellence in leadership; and
WHEREAS, high schools in the areas served by Dominion Virginia Power, Dominion North Carolina Power, and Dominion East Ohio are invited to participate in the Strong Men and Women writing contest that allows students to research the life of a leading African American and submit an essay that explores his or her achievements; and
WHEREAS, contest winners are recognized at Dominion-sponsored events held in celebration of Black History Month; and
WHEREAS, Daniella Jones' award-winning essay was on the extraordinary life and accomplishments of Maya Angelou, who "has played an extensive role in poetry, politics, journalism, civil rights, history, and education"; and
WHEREAS, Daniella Jones will receive a new Dell laptop computer for her winning entry and Salem High School will receive a cash award of $1,000; and
WHEREAS, contest winners also have the opportunity to read their essays in front of distinguished educators, community leaders, and the 2006 Strong Men and Women honorees; and
WHEREAS, Daniella Jones is congratulated on her exemplary achievement, great initiative, and an excellent winning essay; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Daniella Jones as the 2006 Eastern Regional winner in Dominion's Strong Men and Women: Excellence in Leadership student writing contest; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Daniella Jones as an expression of the General Assembly’s best wishes for her continued success in all of her future endeavors.
