HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 216 Offered January 20, 2006 Celebrating the life of George J. Georges. ---------- Patron-- Joannou ----------

WHEREAS, George J. Georges of Norfolk, a respected citizen and dynamic businessman, died on January 13, 2005; and

WHEREAS, George Georges   was born in Cyprus on May 11, 1909, and came to America in the mid-1930s during the Depression; and

 WHEREAS, with the onset of World War II, George Georges became an American citizen in order to honorably serve his newly adopted country in the United States Army; and

WHEREAS, after the war, George Georges made a meager living at "milk jobbing," buying milk from dairies and delivering it in the predawn hours for a few cents a bottle; and

WHEREAS, George Georges' one-man operation grew and prospered, evolving into a flourishing wholesale food operation; and

WHEREAS, when the wholesale food industry faltered, George Georges began a highly successful restaurant supply company; and

WHEREAS, especially sensitive to the needs of struggling immigrants and young entrepreneurs and their families, George Georges was always available to lend a helping hand, as well as his considerable experience, business expertise, and financial resources; and

WHEREAS, George Georges was an active and faithful member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, the Order of the Ahepa, and Little Creek Lions Club; and

WHEREAS, George J. Georges served his community with dignity and devotion and will be missed and fondly remembered by his family, his numerous friends and admirers, and the residents of the City of Norfolk; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with sadness the passing of a fine Virginian, George J. Georges; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of George J. Georges as an expression of the respect in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
