WHEREAS, Thomas C. Scott of Keswick, celebrated University of Virginia All-American and National Football League great, is recognized for his outstanding service to the Charlottesville community; and

WHEREAS, a native of Baltimore, Thomas "Tom" Scott came to the University of Virginia (UVA) as an outstanding three-letter high school athlete; and

WHEREAS, as a college athlete, Tom Scott played as an offensive and defensive end, as well as the kick-off and extra-point kicker for the Cavaliers and received All-American honors for his impressive performance in football and lacrosse; he was the first two-sport All-American in UVA history; and

WHEREAS, an exemplary student and gifted athlete, Tom Scott earned a bachelor's degree in education from UVA, was voted Best All-Around Athlete, and was later named to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1979; and

WHEREAS, Tom Scott began his professional football career with the Los Angeles Rams in 1953, but was almost immediately sent to the Philadelphia Eagles, where he earned Rookie of the Year honors and played for the Eagles for the next four seasons; and

WHEREAS, Tom Scott was traded to the New York Giants, where he played in four World Championship Games and was named to the National Football League All-Pro Team six times; he retired from the Giants and professional football in 1965, having never missed a game; and

WHEREAS, a devoted husband, father, and consummate businessman, Tom Scott established Thomas C. Scott Associates, an insurance firm in New York, where he worked for over 40 years; and

WHEREAS, in 1995 Tom Scott and his family moved to Charlottesville, settling in the Glenmore community; and

WHEREAS, Tom Scott, along with former teammate Joe Palumbo and UVA Athletic Director Gene Corrigan, organized Play It Smart, a program sponsored by the National Football Foundation and the College Hall of Fame that promotes the academic and career development of high school student-athletes in underserved areas; and

WHEREAS, ardently devoted to UVA, his Glenmore neighbors, and the greater community, Tom Scott is active in civic and professional organizations and committed to the prosperity of Charlottesville and the needs of its citizens; now, therefore, be it 

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Thomas C. Scott for his valuable service to the Charlottesville community; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Thomas C. Scott as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation for his many accomplishments.
