2006 SESSION
WHEREAS, Barry Daniel Murphy of Woodstock, an admired citizen and respected former chairman of the Shenandoah County Board of Supervisors, died on August 15, 2005; and
WHEREAS, Barry Murphy was born in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, on January 17, 1931, graduated from Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, Virginia, in 1949, and earned a bachelor's degree from Western Maryland College in 1955; and
WHEREAS, from 1950 to 1952, Barry Murphy served his country as a corporal in the United States Marine Corps assigned to the Reconnaissance Company, 1st Marine Division FMF in Korea, receiving three Battle Stars and two Presidential Unit Citations; and
WHEREAS, Barry Murphy received a law degree from American University's Washington College of Law, was admitted to the bar in 1961, and taught criminal justice at Massanutten Military Academy for three years; and
WHEREAS, an esteemed and dedicated attorney, Barry Murphy practiced law in Virginia for 27 years moving to Woodstock in 1981, where he maintained a local law practice until retiring in 2004; and
WHEREAS, committed to quality legal services for his fellow citizens, Barry Murphy served as the president of the Shenandoah County Bar Association from 1991 to 1992, the escheator for Shenandoah County from 1993 to 1995, and was active in numerous professional and civic organizations; and
WHEREAS, Barry Murphy was elected to the Shenandoah County Board of Supervisors in 1996 and served as chairman in 2004 and 2005; and
WHEREAS, during his nine-year tenure, Barry Murphy supported public policies that improved the quality of life for residents of Shenandoah County and served in numerous important leadership positions, including board representative on the Department of Social Services Board for Shenandoah County; member of the Planning Commission; committee chairman of Property and Public Works; and member of the Personnel, Finance, and Public Safety and Code Administration committees; and
WHEREAS, Barry Murphy will be remembered for his accomplished leadership, his compassion and giving nature, and his faithful service to God, country, and community; and
WHEREAS, Barry Murphy will be missed by his family, his numerous friends and associates, and the citizens of Shenandoah County; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an outstanding public servant and fine Virginian, Barry Daniel Murphy; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Barry Daniel Murphy as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
