Celebrating the life of Walter Edward Barbee.

WHEREAS, Walter Edward Barbee, president emeritus and cofounder of the Christian conservative lobbying group, Family Foundation of Virginia, died August 10, 2005; and

WHEREAS, a native of Wake County, North Carolina, Walter Barbee graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1957; and

WHEREAS, Walter Barbee joined the United States Navy as a pilot, flying helicopters in the early 1960s in Southeast Asia and later, as a reservist, served as a patrol squadron commander at the Pentagon with the Navy command center until his retirement as a captain in 1979; and

WHEREAS, after leaving active duty, Walter Barbee became a commercial pilot with American Airlines; and

WHEREAS, Walter Barbee's activism began in the 1970s when he developed a heightened interest in how his children were being taught in school regarding the family, sex education, and other curricula; and

WHEREAS, in 1985 Walter Barbee and fellow pro-life activist, the late Anne Kincaid, founded Family Foundation of Virginia, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to strengthen the family by improving public policy through research, education, and civic activism; and

WHEREAS, in 1994 Governor George Allen appointed Walter Barbee to serve on the Blue Ribbon Strike Force on Government Reform; and

WHEREAS, gifted at informing the public on pertinent political issues, Walter Barbee contributed a biweekly political opinion column to the former Fairfax, Arlington, and Alexandria Journal newspapers; and

WHEREAS, the Washington Times Foundation honored Walter Barbee with its national service award in 1997; and

WHEREAS, throughout his lifework of activism and public service, Walter Barbee faithfully pursued public policies that benefited and strengthened family values, vigorously responding to controversial issues with sincerity and informed understanding; and

WHEREAS, Walter Barbee served his community and the Family Foundation of Virginia with ardent devotion and enthusiasm and will be missed and fondly remembered by his family, his numerous friends and admirers, and the citizens of the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with sadness the passing of an exceptional Virginian, Walter Edward Barbee; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Walter Edward Barbee as an expression of the respect in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
